  1. ¯What I learned about camera exposure and camera modes

There were many things that I learned about exposure during these last few days. One new thing that I learned is that there is three main points which is the Aperture, ISO speed, and the shutter speed. These all have an important part when it comes to taking the perfect photo such as perfecting the light you let into the image and the amount of time you use in order to take the perfect photo. Each of the settings controls exposure differently such as aperture controls which light can enter the camera. A cameras aperture determines the photos depth of field which is the distance between the nearest and furthest object that shows the sharpness of focus in an image. Then another setting of exposure is the ISO speed which is the part that controls the sensitivity of a cameras sensor that is affected by the light. This control is very much similar to shutter speed which both is on how much the exposure increases or decreases. The only way in which the ISO speed is changed is when the aperture and the shutter speed aren’t to your liking. Then one of the last settings is the shutter speed which is similar to ISO. The shutter speed determines when the camera sensor will be opened or be closed to the incoming light from the camera lens. This setting specifically dedicates itself to how the light is let into the camera. This is what I have learned about exposure which will help me in his class in order to take the bets photography I possibly can with amazing lighting and focus.

The differences between JPEG and RAW

In this lesson we are talking about how there are many similarities and differences between JPEG and RAW. There is one major difference between these two and that major difference is that in RAW it is an uncompressed version or format of an image. Then in JPEG is a compress format of an image which shows the differences between the two as the image format. Another difference between the RAW and JPEG is that RAW contains more of a higher amount of detail. Then JPEG has detail but isn’t like the one on the RAW. RAW also has more options then JPEG which is for correcting the exposure issues that a photograph may have. These are a couple differences between the two JPEG and RAW.

JPEG is a mode in which the it is already processed on a camera which with JPEG it is straight out of the camera and already develops the camera image processor automatically. The JPEG has settings such as brightness, contrast, saturation and even the sharpness in which the photograph can be taken. JPEG can be changed in an image editing application and be compressed into the correct format and come out clearly in which RAW cant do. RAW lets you prepare how you’d like your image and there is less of an flexibility on how you can change it. Although these ae two very well know formats and seen as the same thing by many people they are two very different ways to capture a photograph and by this it is showing you the differences and the similarities that the two have,

Photography On An Iphone

There are many ways in which you could have a strong composition when using a phone camera but it’s the matter of knowing how to use it and in what ways it could benefit your photography. One way in which you could have a stronger composition is to have a focal point and focus on the focal point by making sure the lighting and everything is focused on the main focal point. The second way to have a better chance of taking a better photograph on an iPhone is by shooting from a lower angle which gives a unique angle in order to have a viewpoint of the focal point in which others may not see and simplifies the composition on the photo. The third way in which you could have a better photograph taken on an iPhone is by filling the frame because usually iPhones aren’t able to make one thing stand out more so its best to fill in the frame which helps capture a better photograph so more of the background could be eliminated and be focused on the items used to fill in the frame. The fourth way in order to have a better photograph is including more foreground objects because it tends to give more depth which helps eye move from the front of the photograph to the back. Then the last way to have a better photograph is to break the rules because there is no specific rules on what you can and can’t do in photography which gives the freedom to be more creative when it comes to photography.

Canon Experience Articles (518 words)

In the first article that I read is Ralph Lee Hopkins a wildlife photographer by Grant Willing. In this article it focuses on the wildlife photography, but many just think of the animals in the photograph which is not the main focus it is the story that the wildlife is showing and how they life which sends a story and connection to the audience viewing this photograph. Ralph Lee not only focuses on wildlife photography but landscapes of wildlife and nature as well. His main places to take landscapes was in the Grand Canyon which was when he realized his love for taking landscapes but he later on branched out to go to different locations such as Alaska and many more places. With this backstory information on Ralph Lee, it shows how he is able to work with the animals to be shown as the main focus but also able to have a beautiful landscape that makes the main subject pop out more. He uses a 70-300mm for scenic shots wider angles of the photograph and also sues a 4×5 film camera for his photography which he says that these are “always by his side” when photographing. Hopkins is serving as an expedition leader as well as a workshop leader and lecturer but is always faced by many challenges, although he is faced by many of these challenges and does much work, he always finds time to go back to the Colorado River and Grand Canyon to go back to where everything started for him. These are a couple of facts that I’ve learned on Ralph Lee Hopkins journey from the shift of landscape photography to wildlife and his journey throughout this drift in his career that he started.

In the second article that I read it is focused on Peter R. Miller on Sports Photography by Tom Kirkman which starts off by saying how he has photographed 34 Super Bowls. Eight Olympics, 14 NBA finals, and a Dave Boss photographer award but then says he has relaxed and taken a break on photography after all his hard work over the years and dedication to taking these photographs. His height is also helpful to his photography because he’s able to get higher shots of the athletes, but he says that the connection between him and the players builds those perfect shots. In order to take these perfect shots Peter R. Miller has stuck with Canon since 1990 and uses the 4 Canon EOS-1D X DSLR cameras and for lenses Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM super telephoto lens, Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM ultra-wide zoom lens but these are just two of the five lenses that he uses. For different sport Peter uses different lens which matters by what sport is being photographed because there may be some faster shots he needs to take or some slower based on the game and the speed of the game that is being played. These a re a couple of things that I have learned about Peter R. Miller on sports photography which I was not aware of before.

Favorite Teacher

For my favorite teacher I chose Ms. Griffin which I have for 5 period. Ms. Griffin teaches stage craft which I personally really enjoy because of the new things that I have learned throughout the class. There are many things that i’ve learned that i’ve never done before such as measurements and creating sets. The sets that we build are for the plays which is a new experience because i’ve never done that.

In this class I feel as if i’ve been able to prosper and get the grasp of these new skills that i’ve never had before. Some of these new skills is using some of the machines and tools in the class which we use many and glue to make the pieces and form them into the pieces that they need to be. We’ve built sets and im glad to say I am in this class for the second year because of the new things that I learn not only on building the sets but the different terms for the stage and different theatre terms which I hope to learn many more throughout this school year.

Light Painting Portraits

HDR Photography

This photograph is of the outside of cal poly Pomona.

The clouds were positioned perfectly above the building.

The trees are colored perfectly that stand out in the photograph

The clouds have a color to them that make them stand out which gives the photograph a bright effect.

The sky is bright which gives a good effect that gives it a joyful effect

The photograph is well balanced with the colors and the way that everything is set such as the clouds and buildings

The sun is well balanced with the lighting surrounding it to give a nice warm effect towards it.

Joyfully cheerful mood towards the photograph

A nice sunset photograph with the parking and tree in it.

A beautiful photograph with a color pop added to it.

Fill Flash Outside

Fill Flash is a way to get the lighting better for the photography. It is helpful but can also be extremely difficult to take photographs outside because of the lighting usage. By that I mean it could be difficult to use the flash and get the correct amount because of the sun and the positioning of the sun towards the person. But if set perfectly then a great photograph can be taken with the right amount of lighting to show the person perfectly with a good amount of light toward them.

Ted Talk: Impossible Photography

In this Ted talk it is of a young man named Erik Johansson. In this Ted Talk he is sharing about his photography experiences. He tends to explain about when he started and how he had started his photography journey. He also tends to explain about how he felt throughout this journey on photography. He wanted to start creating something that was different , which was shown when he explained a photo of construction. He says it’s more of capturing an idea than capturing a moment.

He tends to see reality and shows and explains like a long rectangle that looks a bit dimensional. He tends to explain how it tricks the mind. Such as how it tricks our brains and how it’s not the things that we think about. Three simple rules to achieve unrealistic results is combining which can create something unique. You need to learn how to create the same light. A lot can be composed of different locations combined together and it can be a lot to plan.

They tend to show an example of how many photographs he had taken. It all comes with planning and sketch combining. The result can be beautiful and quite realistic. This shows how a photograph can turn into a live moment even if it’s just a photo it can be seen as a reality. In conclusión i like the way he thinks and views these moments and how he tends to throughly plan these photographs.

Motion Blur

1.I learned that these photographs are a bit more difficult to take.

2.It’s easier when u have your camera in a still position

3. the lighting of the cars tend to affect the effect of the motion blur.

4. It’s more difficult to photograph cars moving in the day time.

5. It’s easier to capture motion blur of cars in the night and get a better photograph.

Sandy Skoglund

I personally don’t like her work as much but there are some artistic pieces from hers that catch my eye. This one of the winter themed photography piece caught my eye because of how blue and blended everything is which makes it one. It was just beautifully done and well thought out. My piece is obviously no where near her photography but i like mine because it goes from a light effect on the left to a dark theme towards the right. It gives it a more technology and computer like theme to my photography as if somethings broken in the piece or there’s darkness coming out.

Wassily Kandinsky

I personally really like WASSILY KANDINSKY way of doing his artistic pieces because it’s just shapes put together to make something that creates a meaning. There may not be a true meaning behind her pieces because im not very knowing of his art but to me it’s eye catching. This piece caught my eye because of how one side looks gloomy sad and blue and the other looks fiery red and fierce. It is extremely eye catching and fascinating how simple shapes could be turned into something so abstract and different.

Motion Blur

  1. i learned how to correctly take pictures of multiple exposure.
  2. To get a better photograph turn off all the lights.
  3. It’s best to have the entire room dark and adjust your subject on a black screen.
  4. Allow enough space for the subject to move for the different poses they’ll make.
  5. Set up electronic flash lights so minimum amount of illumination falls on the background
  6. Turn off all the lights and make your first exposure
  7. make sure to adjust the camera settings to the right amount to give the shutter more time for the photo
  8. Many of the actions requieres different techniques
  9. It’s best to have no existing light from outside so it could come out better
  10. with no existing light the different poses come out sharper
  11. Flash unit duration of about 1/800th of a second
  12. also 1/20000th of a second which gives the shutter more time to capture everything
  13. Ghost images can occur when there’s existing light interfering with the photo
  14. outdoors at night, can produce very underexposed photographs if not taken properly.
  15. To compensate for the light lost, you must open up your aperture when photographing objects at any distance.
  16. so much light is absorbed in these large areas, it may not be uncommon to open up your aperture two or three f/stops.
  17. Tests should be conducted before shooting in large, indoor areas, such as gymnasiums and hangar bays or outdoors at night, to determine which flash, camera, and film combination produces optimum results.
  18. Close foreground details become very overexposed
  19. lighting is ideal for these shots
  20. these photos are very complex to take but come out great if these steps are taken

Photojournalism

Throughout this article I was able to see how they Ron Haviv was able to capture some historical moments such as some wars and horrific moments. I feel as if Haviv did a great job capturing these moments because he’s able to show how historical events actually are and how it looks in that moment. He was able to show how rioters were and how they looked and how the atmosphere around them looked. He captures how gloomy it looked with the dust and chemicals floating in the air. He captured how chaotic these moments he was able to also capture emotion of desperation chaos and anger. Everyone in these photos were angry whether if it was the rioters angry on the situation happening or the police angry on the chaos and destruction that is being created. I feel as if this will impact people because of how he was able to capture these historical events but also show the story behind it and show the emotions through the photography which many may feel angry or sad over it. Which is showing the emotional connection that people may have because they feel the same with the rioters or because they were there and remembering on how everything happened.

Culture

Cultural Photography: Read and Response

Today i was able to get a better concept of what cultural photography means which i was able to learn through the article, “What is Cultural Photography” by Adam Marelli. Which this article is able to inform those who may not be familiar with this type of photography and introduce the concept and true meaning on what Cultural photography is. Also on how to perceive this type of photography which is seen through Marelli’s view and through out own view. But what i found interesting about the article is that we’re able to express our culture through photography and it doesn’t have to necessarily be masked or seen through other peoples cultural view but more so your own. Cultural photography isn’t based on peoples ethnicity and there’s not one type of cultural photograph you can take this type of photography is based on life and could be anything that makes you, you.

When photographing this type of photography it is best to not invade peoples privacy or violate cultural norms. Many people tend to think cultural photography can be anything , and in reality it can be it’s whatever defines us. Which Adam showed by saying he did a different type of photography but it didn’t fit him as if it didn’t define who he was or what he truly had a passion for. But it was not only that he was also fascinated by peoples views and see peoples points of views to try to see life through a different  perspective. Which this is how he gained comfort in being able to express and show others what he does and what’s he’s passionate about.

  • Adam tends to photograph in many different ways to see the pictures through a  different perspective. He photographed some of his projects in black and white which was a reflection of the Japanese culture that was embedded in his work. He had said that it is editorial suicide and he doesn’t plan on sticking to this method. He felt as if the cultural view on this wasn’t limited to only being photographed in colored but wasn’t to sure. But overall i was able to see how Adam and perceived the meaning of cultural photography and how he managed the obstacles. He was able to overcome many obstacles and is now able to truly show the passion that he has for cultural photography and be able to introduce the true meaning of this to others and show his experience and mind throughout this.

Brief Summary: Silhouette

Silhouetting is a different form of art in photography that can be made to add more of an intense feeling to the photograph. This type of photography tends to bring an intensity to the photograph such as vacations, family photos, or life in general to make an intense feeling to the photograph or bring a story to it. The silhouette is the surrounding that’s a dark black shape makes it stand out. It may have a dark black shape, but it was not a complicated background, but the background is usually not the problem it is the execution of how the photograph comes out. But the person that may be taking the photograph needs to learn how to deviate the from the rules that comes with this type of photography which follows with the adjustment of the light that can interfere with the subject which its best to have a well-adjusted lighting between the light and the subject. Which leads to know that with taking these types of photography’s you need to have good lighting with a blank background.

1. I chose the words for this photograph because of the relation between the ocean which is shown in the photograph and show.

2. An audience could interpret this and seeing your self worth and finding what’s best for you so at the end you won’t get hurt.

1. I chose the words because of the relation between the moon and how the quote is referring to whispering to the moon.

2. An audience could interpret this by seeing your self worth and finding what is best for you and your happiness.
